Home Office Upgrade Guide: What Actually Matters vs. What Looks Good on Instagram
After working from home becomes permanent, the priorities shift. Here's what's worth spending on and what you can DIY.
The home office has gone from afterthought to one of the most important rooms in the house. What matters for actual productivity vs. what looks good in a desk setup photo are very different lists. Here's how I'd allocate a home office budget.
Contractor Tips
- Lighting matters more than aesthetics. Overhead lighting creates harsh shadows on video calls. A ring light or directional desk lamp positioned to the side or above your screen makes an immediate difference.
- Acoustics are the most underinvested home office element. A rug, bookcase with books, and acoustic panels make a room sound professional on calls without anyone seeing a foam tile.
- A dedicated circuit for your office equipment prevents the circuit trip that kills your workflow mid-call. An electrician can add one in a few hours.
