Holiday outdoor lighting is one of those projects where the difference between a professional-looking result and a disappointing one comes down almost entirely to hardware — not effort. Most homeowners spend the same amount of time getting a mediocre result as a professional-looking one. The difference is in the clips, the lights, and the planning.

Every year I see gutters pulled away from fascia boards by improperly attached holiday lights. The staple-and-blow-gun method — the way it was done for decades — creates small holes that allow water intrusion and weakens the gutter attachment points. After 15 years of stapling, gutters start to sag.

Light Selection: C7 vs C9 vs Mini
The size and spacing of your lights determines how the display reads from the street. Mini lights (the small, closely-spaced kind) look best on trees and bushes where they wrap around branches. - LED C7 and C9 replacement bulbs fit standard screw-base strands. Buy quality LED bulbs (Phillips, GE, Novelty Lights) — the cheap no-name bulbs have inconsistent color and burn out quickly.
- Map your circuit capacity before you start. Count your outdoor outlets, identify which circuit each is on, and calculate total wattage. LED lights rarely cause tripped breakers; incandescent lights frequently do.
