The reason bathrooms are so unpredictable: everything is wet, everything touches a system (plumbing or electric), and old construction often hides decades of deferred problems. Water damage, inadequate subfloor, outdated wiring, and mold are all possibilities the moment you start demo.

• Before any demo, check your subfloor by jumping lightly near the toilet and tub. Any flex means moisture damage — plan to replace it.
• Always use cement board or a waterproof membrane system (Schluter KERDI, RedGard) behind tile in wet areas. Drywall behind tile is a slow failure.
